Information For Local Coordinators

Local coordinators are the people who organize COASTSWEEP cleanups. They are assisted by the COASTSWEEP coordinators who work with each local coordinator to ensure he/she has all of the assistance and supplies necessary for a safe and successful cleanup.

NEW INFORMATION FOR LOCAL COORDINATORS
Fishing Gear
- If you find any fishing gear or pieces of fishing gear, do not move it. Instead, note any identification numbers and report it to the MA Environmental Police Dispatcher at 617-626-1650. According to MGL Chapter 130: Section 31. Destruction or injury to weir, pound net or fish trap. Section 31: "Whoever without the consent of the owner takes or uses or destroys, injures or molests any weir, pound net, fish trap, seine, set net or lobster or crab pot or other fishing gear, or any fish car or other contrivance used for the purpose of storing fish, including any such fishing gear which is swept ashore by storm or tide or other natural causes and deposited upon the shore, beaches or flats, whether public or private, or takes fish there from without the consent of the owner, shall be punished by a fine of not less than five hundred nor more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment for two months, or both."

Sign-in Sheet/Waiver
Please have your volunteers read and sign this form. (You will receive a copy in the mail with your supplies.)

Safety Precautions
To ensure a safe cleanup, please provide these safety precautions to all volunteers. (You will receive a copy in the mail with your supplies.)

Cleanup Report
Please submit as soon as possible after completion of your cleanup. Email to COASTSWEEP@umb.edu. (You will receive a copy in the mail with your supplies.)

Do you need helping recruiting volunteers, or are you looking for some media coverage for your event? Use this generic press release that can be customized and sent to your local papers, community television stations, and any relevant groups that send out newsletters. Please feel free to contact us if you need any help with your outreach efforts. If someone does a story on your event, we would like to know about it, so please send us a link.

2009 COASTSWEEP Poster
COASTSWEEP has provided posters that you can download and customize with your cleanup information. Two sizes are provided—8½"x11" and 11"x17". For those of you who want to use the poster but do not have access to a printer, just let us know, and we'll ship some to you with your supplies.

All material will be shipped to local coordinators at least one week before the cleanup date.
