COASTSWEEP 2008 was a huge success! With the help of more than 2,900 volunteers (that's 1,000 more volunteers than last year!), there are now 4,400 fewer pieces of rope, 5,475 fewer plastic bottles, and 8,336 fewer plastic bags to pollute our oceans, lakes, and rivers. See the 2008 Summary Results (PDF, 73 KB) and the 2008 Complete Results (PDF, 97 KB), which includes a complete count of all items collected. As in years past cigarette butts were the most numerous item collected by COASTSWEEP volunteers. For more on cigarette butts, check out the March 6, 2009 Boston Globe article by Beth Daley
Many thanks go out to all of our volunteers—most important our COASTSWEEP Local Coordinators who worked so hard to recruit volunteers, organize their events, and keep track of all of the data cards.
We would like to especially thank Mike Magnifico, Salisbury Beach State Reservation Supervisor, and his staff with the Department of Conservation and Recreation for hosting the 2008 kickoff. More than 200 volunteers came out to help clean this beautiful park, enjoying prizes and a BBQ after the cleanup.
